Allegory of the cave

Inspired by Plato’s Allegory of the cave, this piece explores the process of collective awakening. Plato distinguishes between people who mistake sensory knowledge for the truth and people who really do see the truth. The soloist en pointe represents a heightened state of understanding who is being rejected by the masses at first, represented by the corps dancers. The dance goes through the different stages experienced in collective thought change. The truth is always first resisted before accepted. Set to the raw vocals of Jaime Lidell’s song “Believe in me”, this piece shares the torment of rejection.
