"Lula" is choreographed by Maggie Segale, a recent graduate of The Juilliard School who is passionate about heritage and innovative artwork. It is performed by six Juilliard Dancers to rare Appalachian folk music recorded in Kentucky in 1960 by Maggie's Great-Great Grandmother, Lula Mae Hamilton. It is a playful piece about story telling that is significant to the history of Appalachian music. The video depicts five of fifteen songs sung by Lula. THree of the five are performed in the Willson Theater at The Juilliard School, and the remaining two are in a studio. This video is a spliced-together version of what will be a full-length work using all fifteen songs. Costuming will be consistent with that which is seen in the clips in the Willson Theater.
