Students work with professional dancers to learn Chinese ribbon or fan dance techniques. Drawing from the lesson, students discover how movement evokes feelings and images; how different movements are integrated and combined to create new ones; and how to begin composing a group dance. The 45-minute lesson includes learning Chinese hand gestures and their symbolic meanings, stories about how they relate to everyday life, simple Chinese vocabulary, and dance routines for groups and individuals. In an extended residency, students can also learn a complete Chinese dance to perform for the rest of the school.
